Concordia Original Typeface

Student work for the Pratt Institute – Typography III Class
Task:
Create a typeface entirely from scratch and create a accompanying specimen book
Goals:
Make a display typeface that uses a curved motion to create something dynamic and unique
The Concordia typeface derives its name from the legendary airplane of the same name. The Concorde revolutionized cross-Atlantic aviation. The supersonic plane could travel between Paris and New York in 3.5 hours, half of the time it took before. It was the first of its kind, and to date it is the only supersonic jet to enter passenger service. The jet had a maximum cruising altitude of 60,000 ft and an average speed over Mach 2 (1,300 mph.)
The major design element of the font (figure a) is inspired by the Concorde’s delta wing. Incorporating this specific element into every single character of the font gives it its identity and serves to unite every letterform. The rest of the character was build in a relatively standard sans-serif principals, with the display font utilizing extremely narrow elements to increase contrast.
The font aims to express what the Concorde expresses: elegance, modernity, innovation, distinction, and straight-up coolness
