Poster for a Cause: The Cost of Nuclear War

Client:

Student work for the Pratt Institute – Typography III Class

Featured at a show titled posters for a cause

Task:

Create a 17” x 22” poster that expresses a cause using only type

Goals:

Utilize a list of prospective names to convey the enormity of the human cost of nuclear war.

Create a high quality piece by utilizing relevant printing methods and presentation materials

Quantifying the destruction of a nuclear war is difficult; the human brain is not built to comprehend such numbers. In turn, the goal of this project was to express the human impact as plainly and as typographically as possible.

There are 1,833 names on this poster; if you were to print out posters until everyone who’d be lost would be named, this poster would be 1 of 2,727,769.

With each poster being 17”x 22,” it would cover a quarter of a square mile of surface area; about the area between 6th and 7th avenues from 14th st to 42nd st in New York.
