Logos
Making a logo is one of my favorite things to do. It is equal parts challenging and rewarding to create a simple mark that instantly conveys everything there is to know about a brand.
Brands
While the logo is the pinnacle, the brand is everything holding it up. From websites to brochures, from packaging to signage, the brand is the practical expression of a story.
Ads
Advertisements are the most public facing pieces of a brand. They are often meant to introduce someone to a product or service, and it must do it in a compelling way.
Pixel Art
I love building with blocks, whether it be Legos, Minecraft, and now, Pixel Art. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but Pixel Art resonates with something in my soul, and I am thankful that I have the skills to make it myself.
Websites
I have one example of making a website, and you’re currently looking at it. Despite barley knowing how to code, I think I made something that expresses myself well and is intuitive to use.
Drawings
I spent at least 20 hours sitting on a bench at 26th and Madison Ave making this drawing of the Empire State Building. Drawing on site is a wonderful experience – I now know this triumphant art deco masterpiece like the back of my hand.
Photos
I live in the most amazing city in the world, of course I’m going to take pictures of it!
Flags
Flags are hard. It takes decades, if not centuries, for one to develop the equity to truly make it the symbol of a place. But that only happens with a good design, which is why New York is not represented by its flag. (Do you know what the flag of NYC looks like? Do you see it on tee shirts or mugs in Times Square? ) So I made an ambitious goal, represent New York City – all of it – with a simple banner. To make it more complicated, I decided that I actually wanted to make six flags. One for each borough, and one for the city at large that incorporates each borough flag in its design.
Posters
What’s the one thing I made the most during my time at Pratt? Posters!
The “History is Sexy” poster is one of my favorite designs. The assigned goal was to make a poster that would get the attention of middle/ high schoolers in a busy hallway and make them think about history for a second. While glib, I believe this accomplishes that goal.
On the other hand, the history of type one isn’t particularly noteworthy or symbolic, I just really like the composition. :)
Editorials
I made both the illustration, and the design. They were made to be two pieces of a whole, and I was never concerned about what they would look like apart.
Typefaces
To make this typeface I made 52 symbols that represent different things but share the same DNA. Also, there are a number of combinations of these letters and every single one of them must work. (I do not know the number; I lack the requisite math skills.) This is a display font inspired by the delta wing of the Concorde. To see more, click here.
Packaging
Packaging needs to be both appealing to the eye, but also completely functional. It’s kind of like the skin of the product. It must protect and serve what’s inside and appeal the outside world while representing what is in there.
Magazines
This is a fictional magazine I made to show off my layout skills. To a layperson they may see some text boxes that took 20 minutes to put together. I see many hours of work creating a layout that directs the eye in a certain way, telling a certain story, all while making it as easy as possible to read.
Transit Maps
Transit maps are a bit of an obsession of mine, and you may need to be obsessed to pull one off. This is for the railroads run by the MTA, the Metro north and LIRR. This graphic represents hundreds of miles, dozens of services, and millions of people navigating a spider web of a system. Turning that all into a simple graphic that is easily readable was a gargantuan (and quite fun) task.
Illustrations
Am I an illustrator? No. Can I bust one out when I need or want to? Yes!
This illustration was for a PETA ad. I made an illustration of resident cool person Lorde looking badass wearing a dress made of plants and being friends with a cow.
Data Visualizations
I believe that data visualization beckons to the heart of what graphic design is: expressing information in a clear, visual way. Here I used a list of names to try to quantify what a nuclear war would do to humanity. To see more, click here
Hey there!
My name is Logan and I like making stuff : )
I am an uber nerd, empathetic thinker, and ever-curious creator. (I am also a Pratt-educated graphic designer based in New York.) But most of all, I understand the importance of a story. I use my own to inform what I do, and who I am. From growing up on a farm in rural Missouri, to studying marketing at a state school, and to moving across the country to the greatest city with the brightest lights on earth, I have always fought to make the most of every opportunity life offered me to write the best story possible for myself.
I started exploring graphic design in earnest when I was 13, making bad mashups and clip art logos in open-source software. It was fun, and I loved it. That’s remained true for the past decade, and at this part of the story I have developed the tools to make a career of this. And a career I will love and enjoy thoroughly at that.
And as a graphic designer, my role is simple: I express stories visually.
I do it in the most visually appealing, creative, and direct way I know how. At Pratt I meticulously developed my creative process and I truly learned what graphic design is: turning abstract, complex ideas into fundamentally sound, instantly translatable visuals. Every business, brand, and person need to tell their story, and I believe I am the person to do it.
My focus is logo/branding design, and specifically how typography exists within it. As much as I love making them myself, I can express nearly any brand, and I would love to work with yours. Of course, I believe I’m more than that, and I love doing all aspects of graphic design. I can do a lot of things and, they’re listed nearby.
